The Port of New York and New Jersey is the gateway to one of the most concentrated and affluent consumer markets in the world. It is the largest port on the East Coast, and the third-largest in the nation. 

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey manages Port Newark, the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, the Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal, the Red Hook Container Terminal, and the Port Jersey Port Authority Marine Terminal.

Combined these facilities make up the marine terminal facilities of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority leases most of its terminal space to private terminal operators, which manage the daily loading and unloading of container ships.

In 2014, The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 3,342,286 cargo containers, a 5.4 percent increase in total container traffic from 2013. The record volumes allowed the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast with nearly 30 percent of the total market share. The dollar value of all cargo that moved through the port exceeded $200 billion.

The port support 336,600 jobs representing nearly $21.2 billion in annual wages. Many of these jobs are allotted to a variety of skilled trades. Meanwhile the port generates close to $7.1 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues.
